Know What You Want To See Of Your Roof

It's important that you don't take your roof for granted and forget to pay it some attention once in awhile. The best way to postpone the need for repairs and even for full replacement is to notice when things start to go awry in certain areas. If you don't have very much knowledge about roofs, then you want to at least make sure you gain a limited amount of it, so you can spot issues as they start to show up. Here are some tips for a better-looking roof that you can count on to last you for a longer period of time:

Do spring and fall maintenance checks – You should check on the overall condition of your roof at least twice a year. Spring and fall checks will prove to be good. Make sure you look the entire roof over. If there are areas that are hard to see then you may want to use binoculars to get a closer look, or you may have to climb up on the roof to inspect certain areas, if you feel it is safe to do so. The things you want to look for include:

  • Lifting shingles
  • Missing shingles
  • Broken tiles
  • Missing tiles
  • Damaged flashing
  • Damaged drip edge
  • Exposed fasteners
  • Missing fasteners
  • Sagging gutters
  • Broken gutters
  • Separated downspouts
  • Damaged downspouts
  • Collections of granules

Trim away threatening trees – Don't watch as large trees get lager and larger with branches that hang closer and closer to your roof. One good storm can take one of those branches and send it through the roof, causing a lot of damage. Stay on top of the tree trimming and avoid issues such as these.

Spot algae and moss – If you see algae and moss on the roof then you want to have it removed. To prevent it in the future, you want a properly ventilated attic and a roof kept free of debris. Proper insulation and ventilation of the attic can also help to prevent other issues, like ice dams.

Keep the gutters clean at all times – You want to make sure your gutters are clean when it rains, so you can get out there before a rainstorm and clean them. However, you won't always know when the rain is going to come and dry brush in the gutters during hot spells can also turn into fire hazards. This is why it's a good practice to make sure they are always clean, so the water can get carried away just like it is supposed to.

Siding should be kept in good shape – You want to make sure you pay attention to the siding and that it is in good shape, from one end all the way to the other. You don't want to see any cracking or rot anywhere. If you do, it needs to be tended to as soon as possible to avoid further issues.
